Welcome to the The Holistic Nurse…
We originally started The Holistic Nurse in search of organic skin care under the name Hippie At Heart. It was my sister-in-law, Dani, and myself. But, along the way, I realized there is so much more to beautiful skin than what you put on the outside. What we put in our bodies plays a significant role in how we look on the outside and how we feel on the inside. This is what motivated me to go back to school and study holistic nutrition.
I decided to sign up for a holistic nutrition program through NTA, to become a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, and though I would document my journey from start to finish…and possibly beyond. I am by no means a writer, but I am invested in this new venture and thought it would be best to document it, even if it’s just for myself…

A little bit about myself. My name is Liz. I am the mom of three amazing children (six month and 2 1/2 year old boys and a 5 year old girl), wifey to another health nut, a registered nurse in New York, California and Arizona, a believer and truth seeker. I have a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Arizona State University and a bachelor’s degree in nursing from New York University. In addition to all this, I just finished up my studies in holistic nutrition to become a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner. Next I plan to take the board exams to become board certified in holistic nutrition.
Going back to my days of advertising in Beverly Hills, CA, to practicing cosmetic nursing in La Jolla, CA, I’ve always questioned the labels that market to us and the ingredients and chemicals used in my everyday beauty products. Motherhood is where my curiosity turned into research. I had no idea how many of these everyday products contained carcinogenic ingredients and were laden with toxic chemicals. And, that these same chemicals have been linked to hormone disruption and reproductive issues. From that point on, our family made the switch to using natural and organic products when possible.

For Mother’s Day, I decided to try and make some skincare products for my mom, and myself. How hard could it be? Pinterest is full of thousands of DIY recipes, and most of the ingredients were already in my kitchen. After making serval products one day and posting a picture to Instagram, I was shocked at how much positive feedback I received. The products worked and were actually very easy to make. My sister – in – law, Dani, called a couple days later with an idea to start a natural skincare company, and Hippie at Heart was born. Since then, after lots of product trial and error, and many recipe adjustments, we have a pretty consistent line of beauty products.

I have always been a health conscious individual, but having children has intensified that even more. Our family has been dealing with food allergies, asthma, ADD, eczema, thyroid dysfunction, depression and anxiety, and I am tired of just being prescribed medications. My journey is to learn more about the root of these illnesses and try to treat them naturally using whole foods and nutrition. I understand there is a time and a place for meds, but for overall health and wellness, I am determined to find the natural alternatives.
This blog is for myself and those who are interested in learning along with me on my journey though natural healing and holistic health. My latest venture is holistic nutrition, and this is what I know and have learned so far…

We still plan to get our organic skin care line up and running end of 2018. Check out www.hippieatheart.com for more information.
xoxo,
Liz McBride, RN + NTP
